The study presents an empirical comparison between the psychometric estimates proposed by the Classical Test Theory (TCT) and the Item Response Theory (TRI). The difficulty and discrimination properties of a group of 50 items and the skill level of a sample of 373 subjects were estimated using TCT procedures and models of one and two TRI parameters; Six random sub-samples were created and six by skill level of the subjects (high, medium and low) and in each one the estimates were obtained from both the TCT and the TRI; subsequently correlations were established between the estimates in the different samples. The results suggest a high association between the estimates of both theories, mainly when the samples included subjects of different skill levels (random samples). Finally, these results are discussed in light of the empirical background, determining that although the IRR shows theoretical advantages over the TCT, the latter could represent technical and methodological advantages; is concluded by proposing the development of a methodological synthesis between the two theories based on empirical evidence in different populations and with different instruments.
