The thesis presents the analysis of the dropout in MOOCs under the AMOES and UTAUT
model, evaluating the effects of the election biases and the gamification on the consumption
behavior of open and online digital courses. The results show: (a) Interest in the final certificate
offers a lower probability of abandonment. (b) Less number of questions at the time of the
evaluation and its gradual increase weekly, as a perceived effort, increases MOOC consumption
and decreases dropout. (c) The use of games during the course operation combined with the
Peanut bias effect offers a terminal efficiency of 23.4%. (d) The intention of consumption and
use of the MOOC are related to the experiences during the course represented in the participation
in forums, use of the games and consultation of videos. The proposed model significantly
predicts the occurrence of attrition in 92% in the presence of variables: Peanut bias,
compensatory reconsiderations and gamification. The results, contrasted by means of inferential
and experimental analysis, are coherent with the literature and indicate that the manipulation
through the selected factors, decrease the dropout due to its perceptual and motivational effect.
The proposals to reduce the dropout, increase the intention and behavior of use during MOOCs
should consider including in the design of the digital courses, the motivating effect of the final
certificate, the effort during the course as a number of incremental questions and the use of
participatory activities as a consumer experience.
