Abstract

Los judíos habían vivido en muchas partes de Europa desde que llegaron aquí con los romanos. Se les consideraba una nación especial. Bajo el dominio cristiano en el Sacro Imperio Romano, sus libertades y derechos llegaron a estar muy limitados. En el siglo XVIII en toda Europa, los judíos todavía no tenían libertad de circulación y sólo podían asentarse en territorios donde hubieran recibido permiso especial. Muchos gobernantes cerraron sus países a los judíos por completo. Incluso cuando se los admitía, los judíos en muchos Estados no podían comprar tierras ni viviendas.

Jews had lived in many parts of Europe since they arrived here with the Romans. They were considered a special nation. Under Christian rule in the Holy Roman Empire, their freedoms and rights became very limited. In the 18th century throughout Europe, Jews still had no freedom of movement and could only settle in territories where they had received special permission. Many rulers closed their countries to the Jews completely. Even when admitted, Jews in many states could not buy land or housing.
