Sentinels are animals obtained from a breeding colony in a known microbiological state and introduced into the animal population of an experimental laboratory, where they act as surveillance subjects for experimental animals. They are used to define the biological status of animals to take into account the presence or absence of certain microorganisms, lesions and other alterations as experimental variables.
